ASL Background
Approximately 2.1% of our population is profoundly deaf, meaning they cannot hear normal things in a conversation, and were probably born with some kind of hearing loss. Out of all the hearing people, only 1.2% of them know sign language and are able to communicate with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing. West Salem High School has two ASL class periods, both with ASL I and ASL II students. Though it is easier for younger people to learn sign language, anyone in every age group is capable (and willing) to learn sign language, whether it's through individual study or in a classroom. This site was designed not only for the ASL students at West, but also the people that are interested in the Deaf culture and want to learn a little more about it.
